Hello wiki:
lo" is an informal or formal salutation or greeting â see spoken greeting. It is also the name of several things. It is also said as "Hi", or "Hey". It may be a contraction of archaic English "whole be thou".Speakers of many languages use "hello" or something very similar-sounding when speaking on the telephone, regardless of the normal greeting in that language. Examples would be Russian "алло" (pronounced as 'allo') and Thai "haloo".The word hello is credited, perhaps falsely, to Thomas Edison specifically as a way to greet someone when answering the telephone; allegedly when expressing his suprise with a misheard "Hullo" (see below). Among other phrases and words that were considered was the greeting "Hoy-hoy"; a running gag on the television show The Simpsons has elderly character Montgomery Burns using this greeting when telephoning, the joke being that he was old enough to be alive when it was regularly in use.
