Objects that resemble this are also called platters, such as the platter that is part of a turntable on which a record rests when being played. It is commonly made of aluminum, but some inexpensive models use a high impact plastic. Platters suitable for more formal settings or occasions are made or plated with silver, and antique examples are considered quite valuable.
